29 September (Wednesday) - Tried to have Steven R. Filchock removed from crew before leaving Wendover. No Go! So we left. By Train!
1 October (Friday) - Arrived Herington Kans. Processed - Assigned Plane 273079. I was made accountable for it. Named it "Double Trouble". Picture of Jackass & Jap.
7 October (Thursday)- Left Herington Field 0730. The start of a long trip in a new ship. Hit overcast west of Jacksonville, Florida, cleared by radio for continuence of flight on instruments. Some real weather for awhile. Arrived Morrison Field, Fla. Ship inspected, crew briefed and another 64. Picked up some mail & radio equipment. Briefed on Hop to Borinquen Field, Puerto Rico.
9 October (Saturday) - Left Morrison Fld 0715. Arrived Borinquen Fld, Puerto Rico 1330. Very beautiful place. Palms all over and it was right on the coast. Darn nice living quarters.
10 October - Left Borinquen Fld. 0700. Flew south along string of Ile's, nice flight. Flew close to Trinidad. Arrived Atkinson Fld. British Guiana 1330. The field is a few miles up the river from Georgetown. Really lost of jungle around here.
11 October - Left Atkinson Fld. 0700. Arrived Val De Cans Fld. Belem, Brazil 1400. The jungle looked like a rug between here and Atkinson Fld. The Amizon is unbeleivingly large and must be about 100 miles from the north shore to Belem on the sough shore. Went to town & the buildings were mostly stone or other forms of masonry. Have very tall doors, half way to the roof. Some are painted the most ungodly colors, mostly green, pink & yellow shades. Some blond people around but all are dark complected. Moss coffee & aqua are only words I learned. Only stayed a couple of hours. Pulled 25 hr. on ship.
13 October - Left Belem 0715. Arrived Natal 1300. Here a 50 hour inspection was pulled by field mechanics. One day for this. Sent clothes to laundry so stayed over the 15th. Bought 4 pair mosquito boots at $4.50 per pair and one Omega wrist watch for $28.25.
16 October - Left Natal 0230. Out 2 hours & #2 prop governor starts acting up. Losing RPM fast. Turned around, back in 1-1/2 hours. Took all day to get fixed and then when I checked it the darn this was worse than ever. I could almost feather the prop with the governor. Boy did I chew.
17 October - All 24s grounded for gas cap problems.
18 October - Field glasses stolen from plane the day before.
19 October - Went swimming in ocean. Had a good time.
21 October - Plane ready to go - finally!
22 October - Left Natal 0745 G.M.T. Had to land because of gas cap. Off again 0830. Arrived Ascension Isle 1730 G.M.T. Very small volcanic isle with an up and down runway beginning on a 200' cliff - kinda tricky! Slept in shacks & tents.
23 October - Left Ascension Isle 0700. Gas leak in right aux. so landed. Not a good place to land fully loaded (62,000 pounds). Took off again & same thing. Finally got off at 0845. It was here that Lt. Wentworth & his crew went down on takeoff on Oct. 16. That was bad luck, only tail gunner got out. They went into the ocean. Arrived Accra, Ghana 1700. Hit African coast west of Tokoradi. Flew east to Accra. Plane is getting 25 hour. Cost $2.00 to stay here per person.
24 October - Left Accra 0945. Field was short & rough, used all of runway to get off. Arrived Kano, Nigeria 1445. Really dropped in at this place. Bought ebony head to send home. Good food here & saw show "Powers Girls".
25 October - Left Kano 0405. Still dark but 1700 mile hop ahead. Did some buzzing along the way. Native villages had brush fences. Arrived Wadi Seidna Airfield, Khartoum, Sudan 1415. Hit a large bird a short way out, put a small dent in plane. A bad squal was over field, high wind & heavy rain. Made a poor landing due to 90 degree cross wind.
26 October - Paid per diem ($84.00). Almost broke down the finance office. Went to town from 1900 to 0030 local time which is 2 hours ahead of G.M.T. Not a bad place. Bought ivory candle sticks ($7.50) & ivory lion & elephant for kids.
27 October - Left Khartoum 0515. Over the Red Sea by 0750. Flew south down the center of the Sea. Saw some sunken ships along the way. Arrived Aden, Yemen 1015. Went to Steamer Point, what a smell. Sold Natal watch for $50.00.
28 October - Left Aden 0405. Played poker most of the way to Masira. Bussed the ocean and saw some flying fish. Arrive Masira Isle 1020. Local time 1320. Went swimming in Ocean, had a good time.
29 October - Left Masira 0205 G.M.T. (0605 local) Arrived Karachi, India 0535 (1210 local time) Tried to stay over a day but 'NO', shoving on in morning. Went to town for a few hours. Gad, what a place. Little kids gallore and all begging or wanting something. The town smells like a barn yard, just like all the others. Bought a coupld of small items. Candy was stolen from plane.
30 October - Left Karachi 0125 GMT (0750 local time) Arrive Agra 0545 GMT (1215 local time) Ate dinner & back to operations to take off again. Filled out clearence, gassed up & ready but can't go. Flight canceled at last minute. Have to wait until Nov. 2 now.
31 October - Went to town and looked through the "Taj Mahal". It's really some place. Rest of town stinks as usual.
1 November - Stayed on post, cleaned up plane & played poker, came out even. Meade's here too.
2 November (Tuesday) - Left Agra 0419 GMT Arrived Pandaveswar 0745. Reported to 7th Bomb Group HQ. Unloaded plane and moved in at 493 Bomb Sq. Our total time from Herington Field, Kansas to Panda was about 87.25 hours flying time. Not counting turn arounds. Trip completed O.K.
3 November - Reported to Group & ass'gd to 493 Bomb Sq. APO 886. Signed in at Sqd. Nice billits - single room but clean.
4 November - First mission tomorrow with a new pilot. A co-pilot with combat experience. I'll be flying CP for awhile now.
