Edwin and three comrades were killed when their B-24L Liberator bomber suffered engine problems and was forced to ditch in India's Sundarbans swampland bordering the Bay of Bengal. Scranton's parachute failed to open in time. He, Margolies and Cunningham, along with their plane, remain missing in what now is Bangladesh. The body of a SSgt. Reed was recovered. Edwin was 27.
