Bill was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1944. Although Bill wanted to be a pilot, attending Flight Cadet School in Miami, FL, the War in Europe was winding down and he, along with so many other classmates, were released from Flight Cadet School. He was transferred to gunnery school, where his job in the Air Corps was transformed to Armorer and Gunner. He proudly served as a tail gunner on a B-24 in the 492nd Bombardment Squadron, 7th Bombardment Group (H). Stationed in India and Burma, he flew on 25 bombing missions. He received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Badge, and Battle Stars for Central Burma and India-Burma Campaigns. At the conclusion of the war, Bill was Honorably Discharged and returned to the States in October 1945.
